• Alpine SG Pipers scored a convincing victory in the final of the Global Chess League (GCL) over Continental Kings — the winner of the first two editions — at the Royal Opera House on Tuesday.
• SG Pipers claimed an advantage by winning the first match 4-2 before settling the tie and clinching the crown with a dominating 4.5-1.5 victory in the second.
• Anish Giri shone brightest in the final for them, beating Wei Yi twice.
• Earlier, PBG Alaskan Knights took the third place, beating Ganges Grandmasters in tie-breaks.
• It was indeed a superb show by SG Pipers, whose campaign hadn’t got off to the brightest of starts, losing both its first matches.
