Geothermal Energy Project MoU signed to make Himachal Pradesh a Green Energy State

Key facts

• The Government of Himachal Pradesh signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with M/s Geotropy India Pvt. Ltd. on 5 February 2026.
• The MoU was executed by D.P. Gupta, Chief Engineer of the Directorate of Energy, and Tomos Otto Hansson, Chairperson of Iceland-based GEOTROPY ehf.
• The initiative aims to harness the geothermal potential of the state to ensure round-the-clock availability of renewable energy.
• The exploration and development of geothermal energy will be conducted without any financial burden on the state government.
• The signing ceremony was attended by Chief Minister (CM) Sukhu, Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi, and Iceland’s Ambassador to India, Benedikt Hoskuldsson.
• The project is part of the state's vision to transition into a green energy state and reduce dependence on conventional energy sources.
