• Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) operationalised India’s first designated Port of Refuge on 27 March 2026.
• The International Maritime Organisation defines a Port of Refuge as a location where ships can seek shelter to stabilise conditions, protect lives and limit environmental damage.
• APSEZ designated Dighi Port on the west coast and Gopalpur Port on the east coast as Ports of Refuge.
• The facilities will provide salvage and wreck removal, firefighting, pollution containment, and emergency coordination.
• The initiative is backed by a tripartite memorandum of understanding with SMIT Salvage and the Maritime Emergency Response Centre (MERC).
