KV Subramanian receives Alumni Award for Professional Achievement from University of Chicago

Key facts

• The University of Chicago has honoured Professor Krishnamurthy V. Subramanian with the Alumni Award for Professional Achievement, making him the first Indian economist to receive the distinction in the award's 85-year history.
• Subramanian served as the 17th Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India from 2018 to 2021 and as an Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
• The university citation credited his Economic Surveys of India as landmark documents providing the intellectual foundation for India's self-reliance and noted his articulation of a V-shaped economic recovery during the COVID-19 pandemic.
• With this honour, he has now received distinguished alumnus awards from all three of his alma maters: the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta, and the University of Chicago.
• He currently serves as a Professor of Finance at the Indian School of Business (ISB) and is the author of the book India@100.
• The award, established in 1941, has previously been conferred upon 14 Nobel laureates and global thought leaders including Paul Samuelson, Gary Becker, Claudia Goldin, Carl Sagan, and Philip Kotler.
