The SC bench, comprising Justices Sanjay Kumar and K Vinod Chandran, stated that Section 7(3) of the Dowry Prohibition Act protects aggrieved parties who confess to giving dowry while filing complaints of domestic violence or harassment.
The amendment to introduce Section 7(3) was based on a Joint Parliamentary Committee report which suggested that dowry givers should not be dealt with on equal footing as takers.
