Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) approves restart of Tarapur Atomic Power Station (TAPS) Unit 2

Key facts

• The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) approved the restart and continued operation of Unit 2 at Tarapur Atomic Power Station (TAPS) in the Palghar district of Maharashtra.
• The approval, granted on May 7, follows a major overhaul by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) and authorises operation for a further period of 10 years.
• TAPS is Asia's first commercial nuclear power plant, with Units 1 and 2 based on the Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) design and in commercial operation since 1969.
• Refurbishment of Unit 2 included replacing reactor coolant recirculation piping with forged stainless steel and commissioning the Reactor Containment Filtered Venting System (CFVS) and Alternate Cooling Water System (ACWS).
• TAPS Unit 1 was permitted to restart in late December 2025 and is currently operating at a rated power of 160 MWe.
