Australia banned the National Socialist Network, also known as White Australia, as the second organisation under a new law criminalising hate groups.
The law was enacted in January following an antisemitic attack on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach in Sydney in December, where 15 people were killed.
Under the ban effective from 15 May 2026, supporting, funding, training, recruiting, joining, or directing the group is punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
The Islamist group Hizb ut-Tahrir was the first organisation banned under the hate speech law in March.
The Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) determines if an organisation meets the threshold to be a hate group, subject to approval by a government Minister.
