- Lieutenant Governor (LG) Vinai Kumar Saxena inaugurated India’s first rock check dam on the Sindhu River in Leh under the Sindhu Jal Samriddhi Abhiyan.
- The structure is located at Upshi at an altitude of 11,400 feet and was completed in seven days at a reported cost of approximately Rs 10 lakh.
- Constructed using 180 metric tonnes of interlocked riverbed rocks, the dam measures 200 feet in length, 30 feet in base width, and five feet in height.
- The dam is designed to create a 500-metre pondage area upstream and store nearly 40 million litres of water to assist farmers in the cold desert region.
- A separate ecological restoration drive was also launched to reclaim 800 acres of barren land in Spituk village using freshwater from the Igoo-Phey Canal.
