Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) releases National Health Accounts (NHA) Estimates for 2022-23

Key facts

• The National Health Accounts (NHA) 2022–23 report, prepared by the National Health Accounts Technical Secretariat (NHATS), shows Government Health Expenditure (GHE) as a share of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increased to 1.43% from 1.15% in 2013–14.
• The share of GHE in General Government Expenditure (GGE) rose from 3.78% in 2013-14 to 4.89% in 2022-23, while per capita GHE increased from ₹1,042 to ₹2,786 during the same period.
• Out-of-Pocket Expenditure (OOPE) as a percentage of Total Health Expenditure (THE) declined significantly from 64.2% in 2013-14 to 43.4% in 2022-23.
• The share of Social Security Expenditure (SSE) in THE, which includes government-funded insurance like Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY), grew from 6% in 2013-14 to 9.9% in 2022-23.
• The share of GHE in THE increased from 28.6% in 2013-14 to 43.7% in 2022-23, while Private Health Insurance as a share of THE rose from 3.4% to 9.2%.
