Uttar Pradesh Small River Rejuvenation Initiative Enhances Rural Sustainability and Ecological Resilience

• The Government of Uttar Pradesh is implementing the Small River Rejuvenation initiative through the State Mission for Clean Ganga (SMCG) to restore ecological resilience and rural sustainability.
• The Namami Gange and Rural Drinking Water Supply Department is preparing a District River Rejuvenation Plan for each district, executed by the District Ganga Committee headed by District Magistrates.
• In Pilibhit, a 47 km stretch of the Gomti River was rejuvenated across 16 gram panchayats, involving the widening of the channel and the revival of 23 ponds.
• The Neem River in Bulandshahr was revived through a 29 km intervention under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), which was recognised in Mann Ki Baat on June 18, 2023.
• Restoration efforts also covered the Sot River in Sambhal, the Karvan and Kali Rivers, and three seasonal streams in Rampur named Revati, Nahal, and Neeli.
