Former Indian shot putter Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal passed away at the age of 67 in Chandigarh after battling lung cancer.
He was a 10-time national champion in shot put between 1981 and 1992 and set an Asian record of 18.71m at an international meet in New Delhi in 1986.
Dhaliwal won a bronze medal at the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi and clinched gold (1985), silver (1983), and bronze (1987) medals at the Asian Athletics Championships.
He was honoured with the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Award in 1983 and received the Arjuna Award in 1987 for his achievements in athletics.
He served as the vice-president of the Chandigarh Athletics Association and was an athletics coach at Panjab University (PU) from 2016 to 2024.
