Researchers from the Central University of Rajasthan (CURAJ) have developed an inexpensive and sensitive sensor to detect toxic lead ions in drinking water.
The sensor was developed in collaboration with the Finnish nanotechnology company CANATU.
The device is a stable self-sustaining electrical testing sensor that can test water without the addition of extra chemicals, buffers, or supporting reagents.
The electrodes were tested in tap water and the waters of the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers within a temperature range of 5°C to 45°C.
The technology is intended for deployment in municipal water delivery stations, water treatment plants, and home drinking water distribution systems.
