IITM and ARIES sign MoU to establish climate observation station in Himalayan region

• The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune, and the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES), Nainital, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on June 18 to establish a climate observation station in the Himalayan region.
• The station will be established at the Devasthal campus of ARIES in Uttarakhand under the Bharat Climate Observation Network (BCON).
• The facility will monitor meteorological parameters, greenhouse gases, short-lived climate forcers, atmospheric chemistry, and soil moisture.
• BCON is a national initiative of the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) implemented by IITM to build a long-term, high-precision climate monitoring framework across India.
• The MoU between IITM and ARIES will remain in force for more than 50 years to facilitate collaborative research through sustained observations of climate variables.
