India and Germany Conclude Negotiations for Project 75(I) Submarine Deal

Key facts

• Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) concluded cost negotiations with Germany's Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) for the Project 75(I) programme to construct six advanced diesel-electric attack submarines.
• The valuation for the project has been finalised in the range of ₹66,000–70,000 crore, equivalent to $8–9 billion.
• The submarines will be based on an advanced variant of the TKMS Type-214 lineage and will integrate fuel-cell based Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology.
• All six submarines will be built indigenously at the MDL Mumbai shipyard under the Strategic Partnership model, with indigenous content expected to rise from 45 percent to 60 percent.
• The programme awaits clearance from the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), with formal contract signing expected in early FY 2025–26.
