The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a USD 230-million loan to modernise and expand water supply and sanitation infrastructure in Chennai.
The project is designed to benefit 4.5 million residents in the Greater Chennai area.
The investment aligns with Government of India flagship urban development interventions, including the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation 2.0 and the Urban Challenge Fund.
The project will construct over 170 kilometres of water supply and sewer pipes, and upgrade seven water pumping stations and 38 sewer pumping stations.
Chennai will be the first Indian city to implement a comprehensive ring-main solution, which is a closed-loop system designed to maintain balanced water pressure.
