Madhya Pradesh records highest GI registrations between April 2025 and March 2026

Key facts

• Between April 2025 and March 2026, 125 Geographical Indication (GI) registrations were recorded in India, bringing the total number of registered GIs in the country to 822.
• Madhya Pradesh recorded the highest number of registrations (26), including Khajuraho Stone Craft, Betul Bharewa Metal Craft, Gwalior Paper Mache Craft, Gwalior Stone Craft Handicraft, Sitahi Kutki, Nagdaman Kutki, Baigani Arhar, and Mahakoshal Chhatriya Chawal.
• West Bengal registered 24 GIs, bringing its total to 59, including ‘Jalbhara’ Sandesh, ‘Monohara’, Santiniketan Batik, Santiniketan Ektara, ‘mecha’ Sandesh, Banglar ‘Nolen Gur’, Kanakchur popped rice, clay doll of Krishnanagar, sitalpati of Cooch Behar, Bengal singing bowl, Balagarh boat, and Kolkatti jewellery.
• The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) chair of West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS) secured approximately 13 of the GI registrations for West Bengal.
• Jharkhand registered 11 GIs facilitated by the Jharkhand Silk Textile and Handicraft Development Corporation (JHARCRAFT), including Tussar Silk Sarees, Tribal Jewellery of Jharkhand, Bamboo Crafts of Jharkhand, Jharkhand Dokra Craft, Kuchai Silk Sarees and Fabrics, Bhagaiya Sarees and Fabrics, Dumka Chadar Badoni Puppets, Jharkhand Panchi Parhan Sarees and Fabrics, Kesharia Kalakand, Jharkhand Benam, and Jharkhand Jadupatia Paintings.
• Other states and union territories with registrations include Himachal Pradesh (13), Gujarat (7), Ladakh (7), Assam (6), Uttar Pradesh (5), Rajasthan (5), Tamil Nadu (5), and Goa (5).
• Handicrafts comprise about 53% and agricultural products about 31% of all registered GIs in India, with Uttar Pradesh having the highest total registrations, followed by Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
• GI registration is administered by the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act of 1999 and is part of the intellectual property rights under the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property.
