SAMARTH: ₹190-crore semiconductor training hub at IIT Gandhinagar

Key facts

• A ₹190-crore semiconductor research and training centre, named Silicon and Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing Research and Training Hub (SAMARTH), will be established at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Gandhinagar in Gujarat.
• The facility is jointly funded by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the Gujarat government’s Department of Science and Technology (DST), and IIT Gandhinagar.
• SAMARTH aims to train nearly 10,000 individuals over five years, including 5,600 undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD students, 1,500 technicians, 1,000 certificate programme participants, 230 faculty members, 230 industry professionals, and over 2,700 summer school and short-duration programme students.
• The centre will house laboratories for nano-fabrication training, CMOS process technology, semiconductor device characterisation, process and device modelling, and integrated circuit (IC) design and prototyping.
• Key semiconductor projects in Gujarat include Micron Technology’s Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging (ATMP) facility at Sanand, CG Semi’s Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility in Sanand, Kaynes Technology India’s OSAT unit, and Tata Electronics’ commercial semiconductor fabrication plant at Dholera.
