Dr. Soumya Swaminathan has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society, an institution established in 1660.
She is the first Indian in the institution's 365-year record to be named a Fellow after a parent who also received the distinction.
Her father, Bharat Ratna recipient Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, was previously inducted as a Fellow for his work in agricultural science.
She is the second Indian woman scientist to be elected as a Royal Society Fellow, following Professor Gagandeep Kang's induction in 2019.
Dr. Soumya Swaminathan previously served as the Chief Scientist at the World Health Organization (WHO).
She formerly held the position of Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
She currently serves as the principal advisor to India's National TB Elimination Program.
