SUMAN Roadmap 2030 to reduce maternal and infant mortality

Key facts

• The Union Health Ministry launched the 'SUMAN Roadmap 2030', a strategic framework to strengthen maternal and newborn healthcare and accelerate progress towards Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets.
• Union Health Minister JP Nadda launched the roadmap at the 16th Conference of the Central Council of Health and Family Welfare (CCHFW) at Vigyan Bhavan on June 29, 2026.
• The framework aims to reduce the Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) to below 70 per 100,000 live births by 2030.
• The roadmap adopts a life-cycle approach integrating pre-pregnancy, antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care, and includes a four-stage framework for the identification, tracking, and management of high-risk pregnancies.
• Targeted and time-bound strategies will be introduced in 130 districts and 13 high-focus States: Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal.
• The strategy utilises SUMAN Panchayats to promote zero maternal and infant deaths, universal antenatal care, institutional deliveries, and full immunisation.
