FSSAI Proposes Front-of-Pack Warning Labels for Packaged Food High in Sugar, Fat or Salt

• The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) proposed front-of-pack warning labels on packaged food and drinks high in sugar, fat or salt.
• The proposed label is a red-coloured hexagonal shape for products high in any two or more nutrients—saturated fat, sugar or salt.
• The warning label will carry declarations such as 'HIGH FAT', 'HIGH SUGAR', 'HIGH SALT' and/or 'HIGHLY SWEETENED BEVERAGE'.
• The labelling will be implemented in phases to give industry time, and single-ingredient food products will be exempted.
• Currently, producers are required only to list ingredients and basic nutritional information on the back of packaging.
