Glaw Lake Becomes Arunachal Pradesh's First Ramsar Site, India's 101st

• Glaw Lake, located inside the Kamlang Tiger Reserve and Wildlife Sanctuary in Arunachal Pradesh, has been designated as the state's first Ramsar site and India's 101st.
• The designation was announced by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav on August 3, 2026.
• Ramsar sites are wetlands of international importance under the Ramsar Convention, an environmental treaty established in 1971 to conserve biodiversity, particularly waterfowl habitats.
• The lake is a pristine freshwater lake in the Eastern Himalayas, described as a biodiversity hotspot.
• It is fed by perennial mountain streams and surrounded by lush vegetation, with more than 150 tree species and 49 orchid species recorded within the site and its catchment.
• India's number of Ramsar sites has grown from 26 in 2014 to 101 currently, reflecting the country's commitment to wetland conservation.
