India Records Nearly 80% Decline in Malaria Cases and Deaths Between 2015 and 2025: Health Ministry

• India recorded a nearly 80% decline in both malaria cases and deaths between 2015 and 2025, according to the Union Health Ministry.
• The number of high-burden malaria districts in India fell from 155 to 33 during the same period.
• Between 2022 and 2025, 160 districts reported zero indigenous malaria cases, indicating sustained interruption of local transmission.
• The 33 high-burden districts, spread across nine states and Union Territories, accounted for 64% of malaria cases and 54% of malaria deaths recorded in 2025.
• A high-level review was chaired by Aradhana Patnaik, Additional Secretary and Mission Director of the National Health Mission (NHM).
• Detailed state-wise reviews were carried out for Mizoram, Odisha, Tripura, Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Maharashtra.
• The ministry emphasised strengthening the routine 'Test, Treat and Track' approach, active surveillance, uninterrupted diagnostics and medicines, and district- and village-level action plans.
• India reiterated its commitment to the Sustainable Development Goal of eliminating malaria by 2030.
