Jal Jeevan Mission Completes 7 Years: Rural Tap Coverage Rises from 16.72% to 82.24%

Key facts

• Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), launched on 15 August 2019, has increased Functional Household Tap Connection (FHTC) coverage from 16.72% (3.23 crore households) at launch to 82.24% (15.91 crore households) currently.
• A total of 12.68 crore additional rural households have been provided with tap water connections under the mission.
• The mission has certified 188 districts, 1,090 blocks, 1.01 lakh Gram Panchayats, and 2.04 lakh villages as 'Har Ghar Jal'.
• JJM has achieved 90.86% coverage in schools (9.34 lakh) and 86.21% coverage in Anganwadi centres (9.73 lakh) with drinking water tap connections.
• The Union Government has extended the Jal Jeevan Mission until December 2028, with the focus under JJM 2.0 shifting to service delivery, source sustainability, and community ownership.
• The 'Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari: Catch the Rain 2026' initiative was launched on 1st June 2026 to enhance community action for rainwater harvesting and water security.
