Mizoram Declares 79 Monuments and Archaeological Sites as State Protected Monuments

• Mizoram has declared 79 monuments and archaeological sites as State Protected Monuments.
• The 79 sites were declared protected under the Mizoram Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 2001.
• Art and Culture Minister C. Lalsawivunga informed the state Assembly about the declaration.
• Two heritage sites in Champhai district have been declared Monuments of National Importance under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
• The ASI-declared sites are Kawtchhuah Ropui and Ralven Puk at Vangchhia village, and Lianpui Hmun/Lungphun Ropui at Lianpui village.
• Kawtchhuah Ropui and Ralven Puk were declared Monuments of National Importance in 2012, while Lianpui Hmun/Lungphun Ropui received the ASI tag in 2025.
• Kawtchhuah Ropui features over 170 intricately carved standing stones or menhirs.
• Ralven Puk is a rock-cut cave traditionally used by Mizo ancestors as a lookout or watchpost during times of conflict.
• Proposals are under consideration to declare four more heritage sites as Protected Monuments.
