Mohsen Rezaee was appointed as the representative of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei to Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC).
He replaced Mohammad Baqir Zolghadr, who had taken up leadership of the council in March.
Rezaee is a former chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and led it from 1981 to 1997.
He is 71 years old.
Rezaee had stated that control of the Strait of Hormuz is more important than dozens of atomic bombs and that Iran would never allow unauthorized control of the waterway.
