  • The bench directed the state “to give wide publicity to the fact that by this judgment, neither the individual rights nor the community rights of the tribals and the forest dwellers in the said area would be adversely affected” and that “in view of the provision of… the Forest Rights Act, all rights of tribals and forest dwellers, both individually as well as of community, shall stand protected”.

Sundarbans Tiger Reserve Expansion: Approval and Key Features (End of August)
  • The Sundarbans Tiger Reserve in West Bengal has become India's second-largest tiger reserve after the National Board for Wildlife approved an expansion of 1,044.68 sq km.
  • The standing committee of the National Board of Wildlife (NBWL), led by Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change minister Bhupender Yadav, cleared the West Bengal government’s proposal.
  • The reserve now is spread across an area of 3,629.57 square kilometres (sq km).
  • Three tiger-inhabited ranges in the South 24 Parganas district — Matla, Raidighi and Ramganga — have been added to the existing expanse of the Sundarbans Tiger Reserve (STR).
  • This expansion elevates STR from the seventh to the second-largest tiger reserve within India’s 58 tiger reserves, placing it just behind Andhra Pradesh’s Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve.
  • The consolidation aims to “bring all tiger-bearing mangrove forests under unified command of Sundarbans Tiger Reserve … in turn, will speed up implementation of NTCA (National Tiger Conservation Authority) guidelines and bring uniformity in management.”
  • The expansion is expected to “enhance tiger management in the Sundarbans and attract increased central funding for the mangrove forest”.
  • The current proposal was formalised in 2024 after the state board of wildlife cleared it in September 2023 and the NTCA gave it the go-ahead.

  • Previous rejection: Supreme Court’s high-powered committee (HPC) chaired by ecologist Ravi Chopra in 2020 had recommended dropping the bypass on ecological and social grounds and instead widening the existing NH-34.
Sundarbans Tiger Reserve Expansion: Key Details and Objectives (Start of September)
  • The National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) has cleared West Bengal’s proposal to expand the Sundarbans Tiger Reserve.
  • With this move, the Sundarbans Tiger Reserve will spread over 3,630 sq km, making it the second-largest tiger reserve in India after Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam.
  • The expansion will include Matla, Raidighi, and Ramganga ranges in the South 24 Parganas district.
  • Bringing these ranges under the reserve’s management will give more room to protect both wildlife and the fragile ecosystem.
  • Benefits of expanding the reserve include wider animal pathways, less human-wildlife conflict, and more room for tigers to roam freely, also improving conservation by giving staff better control over patrolling and protection.
  • The idea of expanding the Sundarbans has been around for more than two decades, first discussed in 2002.
Ladakh's Proposal to Redraw Karakoram and Changthang Sanctuary Boundaries (End of October)
  • A major proposal to redraw the boundaries and expanse of the strategic Changthang and Karakoram sanctuaries in Ladakh is set to come to the Centre for final clearance.
  • It was proposed by the Ladakh State Wildlife Board at its September 19 meeting that the Karakoram wildlife sanctuary's new revised area should stand at 16,550 sq km while Changthang's at 9,695 sq km.
  • The new boundaries will involve exclusion of 1,742 sq km from the Karakoram (Nubra-Shyok) WLS and another 164 sq km from the high-altitude cold desert WLS in Changthang.
  • The 'rationalisation' of the two sanctuaries has been proposed after a detailed study by the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) and discussions with local stakeholders and the administration, as the 1987 notification did not constitute a properly defined area and had a mismatch in the description of North-South-East-West boundaries.
  • The excluded area, including 67 and 45 villages in the two sanctuaries respectively, is key to 'unlocking economic activity and tourism potential in the Himalayan region' and 'facilitating people living within the sanctuaries'.
  • The continued presence of villagers in border areas would be critical for 'maintaining vigilance and securing our international borders', addressing a worrying 'depopulation of border villages'.

What is Molecule?: Weight-loss pills going viral among young Russians (Start of November)
  • Russian teenagers are turning to a viral weight-loss pill named Molecule.
  • This pill is sold illegally and contains a banned substance linked to heart problems.
  • Users report severe side effects including anxiety, insomnia, dry mouth, loss of appetite, dilated pupils, and tremors.
  • Although the packaging lists natural ingredients, the pills were found to be contaminated with sibutramine.
  • Sibutramine, previously used as an antidepressant and appetite suppressant, was banned in many countries due to increasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
  • In Russia, sibutramine is available to adults via prescription for obesity, but purchasing and selling it without one is a criminal offense.
  • Self-administering the drug is highly unsafe as the amount of active ingredient in it remains unknown.
  • After prison sentences for purchasing and reselling, Molecule pills were removed from sale but later launched under the new name Atom.
  • Molecule pills are marketed as a weight loss supplement with banned substances and unknown quantities, differing from FDA-approved prescription GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic.
