A new species of worm-eating snake, Trachischium lalremsangai, has been discovered in the jungles of Mizoram and Myanmar.
The species was described in the Herpetozoa journal of the Austrian Herpetological Society by scientists from Mizoram University and the Max Planck Institute for Biology.
The snake is named after Hmar Tlawmte Lalremsanga, a professor of Zoology at Mizoram University.
Specimens of the snake were identified from Murlen National Park in Mizoram and Haka Township in the Chin State of Myanmar.
The discovery is located within the Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot, which covers 2.4 million square kilometres across India, Bangladesh, China, Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam.
