The International Week of Solidarity with the Peoples of Non-Self-Governing Territories is observed annually from May 25-31.
The United Nations (UN) defines a Non-Self-Governing Territory as a territory whose people have not yet attained a full measure of self-government.
The annual observance of this week was requested by the UN General Assembly through resolution 54/91 on 6 December 1999.
In 1946, eight Member States, including the United Kingdom and the United States, listed 72 territories under their administration as non-self-governing.
Between 1960 and 2002, 54 territories attained self-government, leaving 17 Non-Self-Governing Territories remaining at present.
