Key facts
- The Union Government has revived the 39.68-km broad-gauge Qadian-Beas railway line project in Punjab at an estimated cost of approximately ₹1,400 crore.
- The project was originally approved by the North-Western Railway during 1928-29 and was later included under the Socially Desirable Rail Connectivity Programme in the 2010-11 Railway Budget.
- Northern Railway (NR) will execute the line connecting Qadian in Gurdaspur district with Beas in Amritsar district, passing through Dhapai, Ghuman, Butala, and Sathiala.
- The proposed corridor will include 11 major bridges, 121 minor bridges, 54 road under bridges, and will be equipped with Kavach, India’s indigenous train collision avoidance system.
- The project will benefit religious destinations including Qadian, Dera Baba Jaimal Singh in Beas, Sri Darbar Sahib, Dera Baba Nanak, Gurdwara Achal Sahib, and Gurdwara Bhagat Namdev Ji in Ghuman.
