United Nations Security Council adopts Resolution 2823 (2026) for peacekeeper safety on 23 June 2026

• The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) unanimously adopted Resolution 2823 (2026) to facilitate the investigation and prosecution of perpetrators of crimes against United Nations (UN) peacekeepers.
• The text of the resolution was put forward by Denmark and Pakistan, two non-permanent members of the UNSC, and received support from more than 150 countries.
• Pakistan reported that nearly 4,500 UN blue helmets have lost their lives in the line of duty, including 183 personnel from Pakistan.
• The resolution requests the UN Secretary-General to designate a senior focal point on accountability for crimes against peacekeepers to bolster coordination and capacity.
• The UN Secretary-General is mandated to submit an annual report to the UNSC on the status of cases related to violence against peacekeepers, with the first report due within 120 days.
