Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd to source electricity from 511-MW Khorluchu Hydro Power project in Bhutan

Key facts

• The Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (UPERC) approved the proposal of Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd (UPPCL) to import electricity from the Khorluchu Hydro Power Ltd (KHPL) project in Bhutan.
• The Khorluchu Hydro Power project is a joint venture between Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC), which holds a 60 per cent stake, and Tata Power, which holds a 40 per cent stake.
• The agreement specifies a flat tariff of ₹6.75 per unit for a duration of 30 years to help meet the peaking power requirements of Uttar Pradesh between May and October.
• The strategic partnership aims to develop a total of 1,125 MW of hydro projects in Bhutan with an estimated investment of approximately ₹6,900 crore by the year 2029-2030.
• The power supply from this project is intended to bolster regional energy security and support the clean energy transition goals of India.
