• World Oceans Day 2026 is observed on 8 June with the official United Nations (UN) theme Reimagine.
• The wider action theme for the year is Strong Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) for Our Blue Planet, which supports the global 30x30 target to protect at least 30% of the world’s waters and oceans by 2030.
• Oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth’s surface, produce at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen, and absorb approximately 30% of human-generated carbon dioxide.
• According to the UN, ocean-based industries are projected to provide employment to nearly 40 million people by the year 2030.
• The landmark High Seas Treaty entered into force in January 2026 to protect marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction, covering nearly two-thirds of the world’s ocean surface.
