Assam Statewide Drug Disposal Programme: First Narcotics Incinerator Launched

• The Assam government launched a statewide drug disposal programme, featuring the inauguration of the state's first special narcotics incinerator in Doulasal, Nalbari district.
• The incinerator was provided by the Union Home Ministry (MHA).
• The incinerator will be used over 10 days for the scientific destruction of seized drugs valued at ₹472.51 crore.
• Contraband destroyed in Nalbari includes approximately 60 kg of heroin, 38,000 kg of ganja (valued at nearly ₹190 crore), methamphetamine, Yaba tablets, cocaine, morphine, cough syrup bottles, and poppy straw.
• The Assam government has adopted a Zero Tolerance policy towards drug trafficking and smuggling.
• Assam Police seized narcotics worth ₹3,227 crore and registered approximately 3,300 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act over the past five years.
• In Tamulpur, police destroyed narcotics worth ₹71.92 lakh, including 87.868 kg of ganja, 6,855 intoxicating capsules, and 2.832 grams of brown sugar.
• In Biswanath district, police destroyed drugs worth approximately ₹86 lakh, including 163 kg of ganja and 18.5 grams of heroin.
