Ladakh Administration Approves 17 New Tehsils to Strengthen Grassroots Governance

Key facts

• The Ladakh Union Territory (UT) administration has approved the creation of 17 new tehsils, increasing the total number of tehsils in the region from 15 to 32.
• Lieutenant Governor (LG) Vinai Kumar Saxena approved the reorganization of the revenue administrative framework to eliminate administrative overlaps and ensure each revenue village is mapped to a single tehsil.
• The revised administrative structure allocates seven tehsils to Kargil, six to Nubra, five each to Leh and Sham, four each to Changthang and Zanskar, and one to Drass.
• The LG sanctioned the establishment of new engineering divisions across five newly created districts to decentralise engineering works and fast-track developmental schemes.
• The approved engineering divisions include seven Public Works Department (PWD) divisions and four Public Health Engineering (PHE)/Irrigation & Flood Control (I&FC) divisions.
• Five of the newly created PWD divisions will function under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) to enhance rural road connectivity.
