Key facts

NASA is planning a new mission concept called PRAXIS (Planetary Rings Autonomous EXploration with In-situ Sampling) to directly collect and analyse particles from planetary rings.
PRAXIS would be the first mission to sample Saturn's rings, targeting particles measuring millimetres to centimetres in size that were not studied by the Cassini mission.
The spacecraft will use AI-driven autonomy and a deployable boom to perform 'touch-and-go' sampling of ring particles while maintaining a safe distance.
The mission builds on the earlier Saturn Ring Observer Mission Study and could be applied to future missions such as the Uranus Probe.
PRAXIS will be developed in phases, with Phase I focusing on simulations and system design leading to a physical prototype in Phase II.
