Air Marshal Sandeep Thareja has been appointed as the Director General Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS) with effect from August 31, 2026.
He will succeed incumbent DGAFMS Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin upon her retirement.
He is currently serving as Director General Medical Services (Air) before this appointment.
He is an alumnus of Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune, and was commissioned in December 1986.
He holds an MD in medicine (1997) and a DM in gastroenterology from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi (2005), where he received the Best DM Student Award.
He has been awarded the Sena Medal and the Vishisht Seva Medal twice (VSM & Bar).
As Director General Medical Services (Air), he led initiatives for the Gaganyaan human spaceflight mission and operationalised the BHISHM Cube for rapid medical response.
