ICAR Registers 16 New Indigenous Livestock and Dog Breeds, Total Count Reaches 262

• The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) registered 16 new indigenous livestock and dog breeds, bringing India's total registered breed count to 262.
• The new registrations span nine species: cattle, buffalo, goat, sheep, donkey, horse, pig, yak, and dog.
• The breeds were recognized from 13 states and one Union Territory, including Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Maharashtra, Goa, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Uttarakhand, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tamil Nadu.
• The registrations were recommended at the 14th meeting of the Breed Registration Committee held in New Delhi on August 7, chaired by Dr. Raghavendra Bhatta, Deputy Director General (Animal Science), ICAR.
• The National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (ICAR-NBAGR), based in Karnal, will maintain official records of the newly recognized breeds.
• The recognition aims to reduce the number of non-descript animal genetic resources and support conservation and sustainable utilization of indigenous breeds.
