Shaheed Udham Singh Martyrdom Day is observed every year on 31 July in India.
Udham Singh was born on 26 December 1899 in Sunam, Punjab, and his birth name was Sher Singh.
After losing both parents at a young age, he was raised in the Central Khalsa Orphanage in Amritsar.
On 13 April 1919, British officer General Reginald Dyer ordered troops to fire on an unarmed crowd at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar.
On 13 March 1940, Udham Singh shot Michael O'Dwyer, the former Lieutenant Governor of Punjab, at Caxton Hall in London.
Udham Singh surrendered peacefully and accepted responsibility for his actions during his trial.
He was sentenced to death and hanged on 31 July 1940 at Pentonville Prison in London.
Decades later, his remains were brought back to India with full national honours.
