PhonePe and Visa Roll Out Tap to Pay, Tokenisation and Cross-Border Payments at Global Fintech Fest 2026

Key facts

• PhonePe and Visa jointly launched three payment solutions—Tap to Pay, Cross Border Scan to Pay, and Smart Accept—at Global Fintech Fest 2026, making PhonePe the first app in India to enable Visa's Online Device Tokenization, Tap to Pay, and Cross Border Scan to Pay.
• Tap to Pay lets Android users tokenize Visa cards for contactless payments at POS machines even in low-connectivity areas, rolling out in phases from September 9, 2026.
• Cross Border Scan to Pay allows users to scan Visa-supported QR codes in 14 international markets including Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Japan, China, and South Korea.
• Smart Accept enables micro-merchants to accept card payments directly on smartphones without a separate POS machine, bringing card-present device ownership cost to zero.
• This builds on Visa Device Tokenization launched on PhonePe in February 2025.
• As of July 2026, PhonePe has over 71.5 crore life-till-date registered users and a payments acceptance network across over 5 crore merchants.
