Tata Steel Starts India’s First Coke Oven Gas Injection Facility at Meramandali Plant in Odisha

Key facts

• Tata Steel has commissioned India's first coke oven gas (COG) injection project at its Meramandali steel plant in Odisha's Dhenkanal district, announced on September 10, 2026.
• The project uses cleaned COG, which contains over 55 per cent hydrogen, as a reductant and partial substitute for fossil fuels in blast-furnace ironmaking, injected through tuyeres.
• The implementation was carried out with technology partner Paul Wurth-SMS and equipment supplier Kobelco.
• Tata Steel Meramandali, formerly Bhushan Steel Limited, was acquired in 2018 by Bamnipal Steel Ltd, a wholly owned Tata Steel subsidiary, under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016, and is India's largest producer of auto-grade steel.
• In FY26, Tata Steel logged a consolidated CO2 emission intensity of 2.22 tCO2 per tonne of crude steel and an R&D expenditure of ₹1,456 crore, with a Net Zero target of 2045.
