  • The relaxed slope grants small cars an 11-13 g per km emission benefit while tightening the target by 10-12 g per km for larger cars.
  • Automakers selling higher-emission vehicles will face financial penalties, whereas credits from EVs and strong hybrids can offset these penalties.
  • Manufacturers must comply within a three-plus-two year block period—three years (2027-28 to 2029-30) and two years (2030-31 and 2031-32)—with credits or debits carried forward within each block.
  • Penalties for non-compliance will be assessed at the end of each block and paid into the Central Energy Conservation Fund, of which 90% will be redistributed to states proportional to vehicle sales and 10% retained by the Centre.

Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) develops high-efficiency all-iron flow battery

[China]

Key Updates:

  • A research team at the Institute of Metal Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) has advanced all-iron flow battery technology.
  • The battery prototype demonstrated a 99.4 per cent leak-proof efficiency over 6,000 cycles, which is equivalent to more than 16 years of daily operation.
  • The system retained 78.5 per cent of its energy efficiency even at high power outputs.
  • The technology employs an alkaline-based chemistry and a synergistic molecular design to prevent active material degradation and leakage.
  • The research notes that lithium currently trades at over 80 times the cost of iron, positioning iron-based batteries as a budget-friendly alternative for grid-scale renewable energy storage.
  • The findings of this development were published in the journal Advanced Energy Materials.

Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences (CeNS) Researchers Develop Sunlight-Powered Supercapacitor (Start of February)
  • Researchers at the Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences (CeNS), Bengaluru, an autonomous institute under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), have developed a photo-rechargeable supercapacitor that captures and stores solar energy in a single integrated system.
  • The technology utilises binder-free nickel–cobalt oxide (NiCo₂O₄) nanowires grown directly on nickel foam through an in situ hydrothermal process to act simultaneously as a solar harvester and an electrode.
  • Under illumination, the electrode demonstrated a 54 per cent increase in capacitance, rising from 570 to 880 millifarads per square centimetre at a current density of 15 milliamperes per square centimetre.
  • The electrode exhibited high durability by retaining 85 per cent of its original capacity after 10,000 charge–discharge cycles.
  • An asymmetric photo-supercapacitor using activated carbon as the negative electrode delivered a stable output voltage of 1.2 volts and maintained 88 per cent capacitance retention after 1,000 photo-charging cycles.
  • The study, published in the journal Sustainable Energy & Fuels, revealed that nickel substitution narrows the band gap to approximately 1.67 eV and induces half metallic behaviour for faster charge transport.
  • The device is designed to function in remote regions without electrical grid access, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and conventional batteries.
