Ashwini Bhide, a 1995-batch Maharashtra cadre IAS officer, assumed charge as the 32nd Municipal Commissioner of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday.
She succeeded Bhushan Gagrani and is the first woman to head India’s richest civic body.
Bhide previously served as Additional Chief Secretary in the Chief Minister’s Office and as Managing Director of Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL).
She led the 10.58-km Mumbai Coastal Road project and the 33.5-km underground Metro Line 3 connecting Colaba to SEEPZ.
Her appointment was part of a wider bureaucratic reshuffle ordered by the Maharashtra government on March 31.
