Bangladesh and Cyprus are candidates for the presidency of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
The election for the one-year term is scheduled for June 2, with the session officially beginning in September.
Following the established regional rotation, the President of the 81st session will be elected from the Asia-Pacific Group.
The 193-member UNGA will also elect five new non-permanent members to the 15-nation United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2027-28 term.
If elected, Khalilur Rahman would be the second person from Bangladesh to head the UNGA, following Humayun Rasheed Choudhury who led the 41st session in 1986.
