Himachal Pradesh-UNDP MoU for climate-resilient and sustainable development

Key facts

• The state government of Himachal Pradesh and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to promote climate-resilient, inclusive and sustainable development.
• The MoU was signed by Sushil Singla, Secretary of Environment, Science, Technology and Climate Change, and Dr Angela Lusigi, Resident Representative of UNDP.
• Collaboration areas include circular economy, waste management, social inclusion of waste management workers, electric mobility for waste collection, natural resource management, and biodiversity conservation.
• Biodiversity conservation efforts include landscape restoration, ecosystem-based adaptation, nature-based solutions, biodiversity-linked sustainable livelihoods for local communities, protection of critical habitats, and biodiversity corridors.
• Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu launched the Safai Mitra Scheme to empower informal waste management workers across the state.
• The partnership aims to transform Himachal Pradesh into a Green Energy State and achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through knowledge exchange, capacity building, implementation of pilot projects, and mobilisation of climate finance.
