The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) released the National Family Health Survey-6 (NFHS-6), which revealed that Andaman and Nicobar Islands recorded India’s lowest Total Fertility Rate (TFR) of 0.9.
The TFR of 0.9 in the Union Territory is significantly below the replacement level of 2.1 and represents a decline from 1.3 in NFHS-5 and 1.4 in NFHS-4.
The share of children under five years of age in the islands decreased from 5.3 per cent in NFHS-5 to 3.7 per cent in NFHS-6.
The population aged 60 and above in the Union Territory increased from 11 per cent to 12.6 per cent, indicating an ageing demographic trend.
Preschool attendance for children aged two to four years witnessed a sharp decline from 88.5 per cent in NFHS-5 to 66.2 per cent in NFHS-6.
