All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2023-24 reports record enrolment

Key facts

• Total student enrolment reached 4.50 crore in 2023-24, rising 31.5% from 3.42 crore in 2014-15.
• The Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) for the 18-23 age group was 30.0 in 2023-24, while the female GER stood at 31.2.
• Enrolment in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) courses rose to 1.02 crore in 2023-24, with women accounting for 44% of total STEM enrolment.
• The national Gender Parity Index is 1.08, indicating female college participation has remained higher than male participation for seven consecutive years.
• Enrolment across social categories includes Scheduled Tribe (ST) at 28.83 lakh, Other Backward Classes (OBC) at 1.80 crore, Scheduled Caste (SC) at 69.72 lakh, and Minority students at 33.3 lakh.
• Foreign student enrolment in India is 58,134 from 173 countries, with Nepal having the highest share of 24%.
