Assam has become the first state in India to commercially produce Matcha tea.
Commercial production commenced at the Chota Tingrai Tea Estate located in the Tinsukia district of eastern Assam.
The first commercially produced batch of Matcha tea was sold for ₹3,000 per kg at the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre.
The initiative is the result of a decade-long collaboration between India and Japan to introduce Japanese expertise and specialised machinery to the tea sector.
Matcha is a finely ground green tea powder made from shade-grown tea leaves, originating from cultural exchanges between China and Japan.
