• Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has lifted the nearly decade-long restriction on Indian ₹200 and redesigned ₹500 notes.
• Indian and Nepalese nationals can now carry these denominations up to ₹25,000 per person.
• The restriction had been in place since India's 2016 demonetisation.
• Only Indian currency notes issued on or after November 9, 2016, are permitted.
• Pre-2016 Indian ₹500 and ₹1,000 notes remain prohibited in Nepal.
• Nepalese nationals cannot bring Indian currency from any country other than India, nor carry it to a third country except India.
• Travellers can bring up to USD 5,000 or equivalent in foreign currencies without customs declaration; amounts above require declaration.
• For Indian currency, amounts up to USD 5,000 equivalent require no declaration only if denominations do not exceed ₹100.
