Larsen & Toubro Delivers Samarthak, Indian Navy’s First Indigenous Multi-Purpose Vessel on 27 August 2026

Key facts

• Larsen & Toubro delivered Samarthak, the Indian Navy’s first indigenous Multi-Purpose Vessel, at Kattupalli on 27 August 2026.
• Samarthak has over 75 percent indigenous content and was built under the Ministry of Defence’s ₹887 crore 'Buy (Indian)' contract signed with L&T in March 2022.
• The vessel was launched on 14 October 2024 at Kattupalli in a ceremony presided over by Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, then Chief of Naval Staff.
• Samarthak is approximately 107 metres long and 18.6 metres wide, has a displacement of over 3,750 tons, and can attain a maximum speed of 15 knots.
• It is designed as a trials and evaluation platform to support maritime surveillance, reconnaissance, offshore patrolling, and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations.
• The vessel can tow ships, launch and recover targets, operate uncrewed autonomous vehicles, and support the launch and recovery of torpedoes.
• It can provide salvage support, logistics missions to India’s island territories, and humanitarian operations with limited hospital capability.
• Samarthak is the first of two multi-purpose vessels ordered under the contract.
