Two Mumbai Doctors to Receive Nishan-e-Imtiaz

Key facts

• Pakistan will confer its highest civilian honour, the Nishan-e-Imtiaz, on two Indian doctors from Mumbai's Parsi community.
• A radiologist and a physician were recognised for keeping the terminal illness of Pakistan's founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah a secret in 1946.
• The announcement was made by Minister Ahsan Iqbal on Pakistan's Independence Day, August 14.
• Jinnah died in September 1948, thirteen months after the formation of Pakistan, from tuberculosis which was incurable at the time.
• Nishan-e-Imtiaz, also called the Order of Excellence, is the first category of Pakistan's Order of Imtiaz and is given for achievements towards global recognition of the country or outstanding national service.
• The award is formally conferred at a presidential investiture ceremony on Pakistan Day, March 23.
• Indian actor Dilip Kumar was awarded the Nishan-e-Imtiaz in 1998 in the field of fine arts.
